Overview

The California Radiation Safety Certification course provides the participant with the required curriculum to obtain certification in California. Our Board-approved course ensures, through lecture, lab/pre-clinical instruction, that each participant demonstrates minimum competency and the safe application of the principles and techniques of radiography prior to human subject exposures. Certification through a Board-approved provider is required to expose radiographs of any type, using any dental radiographic equipment, in any dental-related setting. For clarification, go to the DBC website at www.dbc.ca.gov and research CCR Sec 1014 and 1014.1.

All course requirements for lecture, lab, pre/clinical and clinical instruction, including the requirements for human subject radiographs are consistent with BOARD REGULATIONS and must be completed in order to achieve certification.

Requirements

All participants must provide certificate evidence of the following courses:

  • Board-Approved 8-hour Infection Control certification course

  • Board-Approved 2-Hour Dental Practice Act course

  • Current Basic Life Support “BLS” card

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • Cannot be pregnant

  • Must show evidence of current employment in a dental office – do not enroll in this course without having employment in a dental office.

Please prepare to bring copies of the courses detailed above.

Curriculum

The course participant will be completing the didactic instruction and examination portion of the course online prior to completing the laboratory and clinical requirements of the course on our campus. Course participants will receive an email invite to participate in the course via our LMS (Absorb), two weeks prior to the scheduled course. Participants will not be able to attend the course if the LMS requirements are not completed.

Additional course requirements include:

  • Completion of a written Radiation Safety for California examination PRIOR to exposures on human subjects.

  • Completion of two sets of bitewing radiographs (4 films, intraoral) on radiographic training mannequins using traditional intraoral image receptors.

  • Completion of two sets of full-mouth radiographs (18 films, traditional mix of periapical and bitewing exposures) on radiographic training mannequins using traditional intraoral image receptors (no extraoral images accepted).

  • Completion of four sets of full-mouth radiographs (18 films, traditional mix of periapical and bitewing exposures) on human subjects with written permission from a licensed dentist using digital intraoral image receptors (no extraoral images accepted); enrolled students will have four (4) weeks to complete the clinical portion of the course within their own dental office environment. Clinical patients, other than student partners, will not be brought to the course nor will we continue to accommodate students who cannot perform clinical competencies in an extramural facility (dental office).

  • DDS verification and authorization is required to be obtained prior to exposing radiographs on patients.
